The 50/30/20 Budget Rule (and How to Actually Use It)

The 50/30/20 rule is the simplest budgeting framework that actually works: put 50% of your take-home pay toward needs, 30% toward wants, and 20% toward savings and debt. It's popular because there's almost nothing to learn — three numbers and you're budgeting. Here's exactly how to calculate your split, what goes in each bucket, where the rule breaks down, and how to run it on your phone.
The three buckets
Start with your after-tax (take-home) income — the amount that actually lands in your account — and divide it three ways:
- 50% — Needs. The essentials you can't skip: housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, insurance, minimum debt payments.
- 30% — Wants. The nice-to-haves: dining out, streaming, hobbies, travel, shopping.
- 20% — Savings & debt. Emergency fund, retirement, investments, and extra debt payments beyond the minimums.
How to calculate your numbers
Multiply your monthly take-home pay by 0.50, 0.30, and 0.20.
Example: $6,000/month take-home → $3,000 needs · $1,800 wants · $1,200 savings & debt.
That's the entire math. Whatever your income, those three targets are your budget.
Where the rule breaks down (and how to bend it)
Be honest about its limits — it's a starting point, not a law:
- High cost-of-living areas. If rent alone eats more than 50% of your pay, the classic split isn't realistic. Adjust it — e.g., 60/20/20 — rather than abandon it.
- Lower incomes. When necessities take a bigger share, needs may run past 50% and that's fine; protect some savings, even 5%, and build from there.
- It's not granular. 50/30/20 tells you the big buckets but not how much to spend on each category inside them — that's where per-category budgets come in.
The rule's whole value is as a quick, sane framework to start from. Tune the percentages to your reality and it still works.
How to run 50/30/20 on your iPhone
You don't need a special "50/30/20 app" — you need category budgets that add up to the right totals. In SimplifyPocket:
- Work out your three targets (income × 0.50 / 0.30 / 0.20).
- Tag each of your categories as a need, want, or savings item.
- Set category budgets so each group lands near its target.
- Log spending — by voice or a tap — and watch each bucket in real time.
No bank linking, no method to memorize beyond three numbers — just a budget you can actually keep.
