A Spendee Alternative With Voice Entry and Shared Budgets

Looking for a Spendee alternative? Compare Spendee with SimplifyPocket: log spending by voice or receipt, share real budgets with a partner, no bank link.

If you like Spendee but want an app where you speak or snap a purchase instead of tapping it in, and where a partner shares your budgets and not just a wallet, SimplifyPocket is a Spendee alternative built for that. It never connects to your bank. Spendee is a well-made app with a real free plan, so here's an honest look at what each one does and who each one suits.

What does Spendee do?

Spendee is a money tracker built around wallets. A wallet can hold cash, a bank account or a "financial occasion" like a trip. According to its App Store listing, Spendee offers:

  • Budgets for the categories you spend the most on
  • Wallets to keep cash, bank accounts and one-off events apart
  • An AI receipt scanner that fills in a transaction from a photo
  • Shared finances "to efficiently manage money with partners or flatmates"
  • Multiple currencies, labels, and a web version for a bigger screen

With its paid Premium plan, Spendee can also connect bank accounts, e-wallets like PayPal and crypto wallets and automatically import and categorize their transactions. It says it supports more than 2,500 financial providers worldwide.

Is Spendee free?

Partly. The free basic version gives you one cash wallet and one budget, plus backup and sync and import/export. More than that takes a subscription. Per Spendee's help center, as of October 2026:

Spendee notes that prices are shown in your local currency and can differ by country. Its US App Store listing also shows other in-app purchase amounts, such as a $3.99 and a $27.99 Plus option, so check the price inside the app before you subscribe. Both paid plans come with a 7-day free trial, and you enter payment details up front to start it.

How does sharing work in Spendee?

This is the part couples should read closely. Spendee shares wallets, not whole budgets. From its shared wallets help page:

  • Sharing is a paid feature, but only the wallet's owner needs Plus or Premium. Guests can use the free app.
  • Bank account wallets can't be shared yet. Spendee's sharing steps start from a cash wallet.
  • Budgets aren't shared. Each member can build the same budget on the shared wallet, but "each budget belongs to the individual user and has its own settings." A free guest can still only create one budget.
  • The shared wallet uses the owner's categories, and only the owner can change them.

That setup works well for roommates splitting groceries. It's less of a fit if you want two people looking at the same category budgets and the same "what's left" number.

Why look for a Spendee alternative?

Common reasons people go looking:

  • You don't want to link a bank, and you're tired of typing. Bank connections are a Premium feature, so without them you enter spending by hand, by receipt scan or by importing a file. If tapping in every coffee is why you keep falling behind, a faster way to log helps more than another chart. See adding expenses by voice.
  • You want to budget as a couple, not just share a wallet. If you want one set of budgets you both watch, Spendee's per-person budgets can feel like two budgets side by side.
  • You want fewer moving parts. Wallets, labels and currencies are useful, but some people only want to know how much is left in each category before payday.

How SimplifyPocket works instead

SimplifyPocket skips bank connections entirely. You add spending the moment it happens:

  • Say it. Tap the mic and say "twelve dollars lunch." The app turns it into a transaction for you to confirm.
  • Snap it. Scan a receipt and review the transaction it pulls out.
  • Type it. Enter it by hand when that's quicker.

You set a budget per category and can start your budget cycle on the day you get paid instead of the 1st. Income and scheduled bills go in too, so you see what's left to spend this cycle.

To budget together, one of you opens Settings → Household and invites the other by email. Once your partner accepts, you share the transactions and budgets you each add from then on, against the same numbers. Anything you'd logged before pairing stays private. One subscription covers both of you.

The trade-offs to know before you switch:

  • No bank sync, on purpose. If you want transactions to appear automatically, Spendee Premium does that and SimplifyPocket doesn't. Our post on budgeting without linking your bank covers why some people prefer it this way.
  • One currency. If you track spending across currencies, Spendee handles that better.
  • No free tier. Spendee has a free basic plan. SimplifyPocket is paid after the trial.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Spendee if you want bank sync, multiple currencies or a web version, or if one wallet and one budget on the free plan is all you need.

Choose SimplifyPocket if you'd rather not connect a bank, you want logging a purchase to take a few seconds by voice or photo, and you want to share real budgets with a partner. Our guide to budgeting as a couple can help you set that up, and tracking cash spending explains why manual logging catches what a bank feed misses.

Common questions

Is Spendee free? It has a free basic plan with one cash wallet and one budget. Unlimited wallets, budgets and sharing need Spendee Plus; bank connections need Spendee Premium.

Can you share a budget in Spendee? Not directly. You can share cash wallets, but each member's budgets are their own, per Spendee's help center.

Is there a Spendee alternative that doesn't link to your bank? Yes. SimplifyPocket never connects to a bank. You log spending by voice, typing or receipt scan, and a partner can share the same budgets. See pricing.
